Nonsensical Scuttlebutt
There are several dive stores in Florida with moderate to high, and in some cases even extravagant, overhead operational costs. Some of these stores, even in the low overhead cost range, who, only wish to maximize their profits, don't understand current economics, current modern training methodology and simply cannot compete or don't "get it", would have you believe or even worry about selecting a 2 day dive certification course with a relatively low price. Their arrogance and suggestion or assertion that an inexpensive course or a 2 day course, or a program NOT with "their preferred training agency" is somehow less safe, poor quality, shoddy, empty, or lacking is not only nonsensical but laughable. Often, this is merely a ploy or a feeble attempt to scare you into choosing their higher priced, longer (i.e.: less efficiently taught) course, taught by less experienced instructors.
Equating Price or Time to Safety or Value in a Dive Education is simply foolish, shameful and perhaps ignorant, as if to say "you must pay at least this amount" to get a good or safe course. Ridiculous, would our customers "feel safer" or "be safer" if we charged them $500.00, $1000.00 or more; doubtful. In Reality, what you pay for a course is relative to the store's overhead and operational costs, price structure, location, season, the economy, the number of participants in a class, arrogance, greed and so forth. Fact, "Longer Courses Don't produce Safer, Better Divers" This was clearly demonstrated and proven beyond any doubt in the 60's , 70's and early 80's. In fact, numerous studies reflected in today’s' "modern” course curricula indicate more information is imparted with higher retention and in-water practical time and skills proficiency to be significantly increased. Moreover many of these "so called" longer courses are only reconfigurations of time blocks. In other words meeting for 3 hours per day (or night) for' 7 or 8 sessions might initially appear to be a longer course, but in fact their not. Modern and efficient 2 day courses are typically configured in 8-10 hour time blocks. with measurably more in-water time. Lets face it, you learn to dive by diving, and not by listening to some "instructor" pontificate and tell war stories or rant on and on and on. You know the "type" "Diving Gods" seeking homage; who are a "legend in their own mind". While somewhat rare today in the recreational dive community, our experience suggests they are commonplace in the "technical" dive community. "Years ago you could spot them a mile away wearing their "patch" jacket. This illness is commonly known as an "emblem ism"
Ask yourself, is the aircraft you may be flying in today "less safe" because you bought a super saver non refundable ticket weeks or months ago. Will the passenger sitting next to you, who purchased their ticket only today at the maximum price, perhaps 5 times the cost of your ticket, have a "safer flight" than you, simply because they paid more.? The answer of course is NO. Clearly, all stores offering a sanctioned, certified program by one of the four major training agencies have an obligation and a duty to perform and meet or exceed the required standards and maintain the safety of the participants. Furthermore for any business or industry to succeed "listening to your customer" becomes RULE # 1. Today’s' customer has spoken loudly and 2 & 3 Day certification courses , implementing "state of the art" techniques, materials , media (Online- CD-ROM -Text) are the result. Customers today, as always, are shopping for value and our programs provide exceptional value.
Price, or Time be it high or low should never be the criteria by which courses are "judged"; rather, research, ask questions and enroll in the program that provides you with the most value, convenience, and that best meets your needs or style of learning. When taught by Certified Trained, and most important, experienced professionals, Course Safety has little to do with tuition price or style of learning.

New SDI™/TDI™ leadership program “best thing since sliced bread”
Divemaster candidates for innovative sport diving agency SDI™ and its technical diving sister agency TDI™ learned earlier this week that they can now complete the academic portion of their education for SDI and TDI Divemaster ratings ONLINE.
According to early feedback from a select group of DM candidates and SDI, TDI instructors, the completely rewritten and redesigned Divemaster program, which includes a 420-page student manual to accompany the 31-Chapter online academics application, is “the best thing since sliced bread” and "exactly the type of thing we need to produce quality dive leaders… ”
The SDI Group pioneered onLine eLearning programs for divers, and the latest offering seems destined to help SDI gain credence with a whole new generation of potential DM candidates.
“We’re not saying that onLine training is only popular with younger candidates,” explained Paul Montgomery, director of international business development for the group. “But we have learned in more than five years of offering eLearning as an option for open water candidates and for several SDI specialties, that younger consumers expect academics to be online because they have been exposed to that sort of delivery in school and university settings.”
Mirroring an earlier statement made by Group President Brian Carney, Montgomery said that the launch of the new Divemaster materials is “our most ambitious new product launch yet!”And he mentioned that this is the first time that the company has released a total revamp of an existing program that includes an online program, student manual, knowledge quest, instructor guide and electronic classroom presentation.
“This is an extremely comprehensive study of the academic subjects a DM must have and I’m very proud of what we have accomplished here,” he stated.
Sean Harrison, VP Training and Member Services for SDI™ explained one of the benefits to Dive Facilities of putting the DM program online. “Often, the instructor who is best suited to develop dive leaders is the one person who has the least time available. The perfect solution is blended learning through SDI’s online training. Our proven online system is able to move the divemaster candidate through their academics at their own pace, freeing up valuable instructor time to work hands-on with them to refine their leadership qualities as well as diving, risk-management, and dive business skills.”
Harrison also commented that in light of the length of this new course, and the complexity of the materials covered, online students will also receive a printed Manual and Knowledge Quest to support the electronic version. The student kit, available from SDI, TDI dive facilities, will also include a hat, briefcase, SDI sticker and embroidered patch, water-proof USN tables, student record folder, and set of rescue slates.

Remember If you were certified with a Certification Agency other than S.D.I., for instance the Y.M.C.A. ,S.S.I, N.A.U.I., P.D.I.C., or P.A.D.I. or whatever you can continue to take courses that interest you regardless of the new courses certification. No Diver is ever "locked in" to a single program, Nor do you have to start over from the beginning in any agency, most recognize equivalency. It is not uncommon for divers to hold cards from several different certification agencies. |
