DIVINGS MOST COMMON MYTH

Perhaps the longest running myth in scuba diving has to do with the wetsuit and its ability

to keep you warm. Most divers, including many Instructors believe that a "thicker" wetsuit

will keep you warmer than a thin wetsuit. In other words a 3mm wetsuit is not as warm as say a 7mm

wetsuit. By that reckoning, an 8mm wetsuit should keep your body temperature 120 degrees and

a 10mm wetsuit should produce a body temperature of 140 and so forth. Obviously this is not the case.

The fact is a "thicker" wetsuit will keep you warm (body temperature) LONGER, and not Warmer.

"thicker wetsuits" simply delay the inevitable, and the rate of heat loss is slower.

Whatever your body temperature is, it will remain the same regardless of suit thickness.

Only the time in which you feel chilled will be different.

Fact: Rear Zip suits typically last much longer and generally "feel warmer" than front Zip suits.

Choose a wetsuit with NO SEAMS in the arm pits, or groin area. Diamond gussets eliminate heat

loss in these critical areas.

So Remember "thicker suits don't keep you warmer, they keep you warm longer"

Deep Stop Function

ADVENTURE DIVING PRODUCT TIP

We often hear the question " Is there an advantage in selecting a wrist computer over a console mounted model"

The answer is a decidedly YES!. Although console mounted computer are very popular and have been for many years, primarily due to their ease and not having to attach them on each dive. Its important to realize though, that wrist mount computers last far longer, perhaps as much as 5 times longer on average because they are not subjected to the same abuse. Console mounted computers often drag along the bottom and strike the tank during entry if not properly secured. They are exposed to more sunlight out of the water and often get "beat up" before, during and after the dive. On safety and deco stops your required to hold the line, bc deflator and computer at the same time, a somewhat tenuous process. By their very nature wrist computers worn on the right wrist (wearing a computer on the left wrist will cause rapid ascent warnings when you raise your arm to operate your BCD, and are tough to monitor while using your bcd inflator/deflator) will not be exposed to the same elements a console mounted computer is and generally better cared for as a watch would be. Cosmetically the difference is obvious as well. One final advantage to wrist mounted computers is that they encourage the use of "backup" analog depth - pressure - compass consoles

To Dunk or Not To Dunk

Adventure Divings' Dry Fill Procedure

Visiting Guests often appear puzzled when they discover we ’re apparently filling dive cylinders “Dry” and not lifting them into a container of water to achieve the desired goal of a cold fill. As many learn in their basic scuba course a significant amount of friction and heat occurs in the filling process Resulting in cylinders which read high and appear full. When later placed in the dive environment, tank pressures Can drop as the air condenses, resulting in a less full tank. Scientifically this is explained as Charles Law. The premise is sound.

For air conditioned indoor filling facilities and dive centers outside the South, a water filled fill tank is probably not a bad idea. The reality in Florida however is a bit different. Water in outdoor water cooling tanks whether they be barrels or whatever quickly adjust to ambient “Florida” temperatures, and usually within an hour are the same temperature as the air. Their effectiveness in cooling a filling cylinder is now diminished. When several cylinders are subsequently filled In the so called “cooling bath” the water temperature becomes warmer than the air rendering the water bath completely ineffective, at which point the water tank becomes “for show” only.

We don’t Believe in propagating or perpetuating this “for show” myth.

In the past at two of our facilities we installed a tank shower system Which solved this problem.The true secret to a cold fill is to fill the cylinder slowly, and when temps in Florida are hot using a hose to wet the cylinder is far more effective than any cooling tank. One final point, water bathing a tank in dirty salt and bacteria laden waterexposes the cylinder and in particular the valve to unnecessary wear and tear. Unless the water is changed daily, your better off to dry fill slowly. From a pragmatic point of view dry filling cylinders eliminated thousands upon thousands of tank lifts per year by staff, ultimately saving their “backs”From unnecessary strains and sprains.
